About this project

„Education liberates the intellect, unlocks the imagination and is fundamental for self-respect. It is the key to prosperity and opens a world of opportunities, making it possible for each of us to contribute to a progressive, healthy society. Learning benefits every human being and should be available to all.“
(UN Agenda 2030, Goal 4: Quality Education)

~ 1.2 million children in South Africa do not receive adequate education.
School uniforms and shoes are mandatory in South Africa. Children whose families cannot afford them are often excluded from school education. Furthermore, school attendance costs fees and materials such as textbooks have to be paid by the families. These are just a few of the reasons why about 1.2 million children in South Africa do not receive regular or no education.
God Bless the Child e. V. is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring and improving the quality of education for children in Durban, South Africa. Co-founder Balungile Gumede, origins in Umlazi Township, visited this school as young girl. Today she lives in Hamburg, Germany, successful as musical singer for the musical ‚The Lion King‘, she looks back deeply grateful. Her musical early-education is grounded primarily on the education of the Phila School.
Purchase of textbooks
The current project Pro Phila supports 930 children at the Phila Primary School in Umlazi Township in Durban, South Africa. The situation of the people in this township is severely disadvantaged. Unemployment, partly due to illiteracy, is extremely high. Every year, we support the students with donated items (such as in 2019 school shoes), which enable the children to attend school. By 2020, we want to buy textbooks and writing materials for the school's students.
What does your donation do?
