    About this project

betterplace-Team from Global Brigades Germany e. V. is responsible for this project
    Who are we?
Global Brigades (GB) is one of the world's largest development organizations, led and supported solely by students. The organisation was founded in 2004 and since then has successfully provided support in the partner countries of Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua and Ghana.
Since 2012, GB has also been active as a university group at the SDI Munich and has already successfully implemented several humanitarian projects in Ghana, Panama and Nicaragua. We follow a holistic model, which is based on the "United Nations Sustainable Development Goals". Here we have focused on "Healthcare, Water & Sanitation and Economic Development" and complement our goals with "Education, Environmental Sustainability and Female Empowerment Initiatives".

    The Ghana 2019 Project
Now another student aid project is to be realized this year. Due to the lack of sanitation and the resulting poor hygienic conditions in parts of Ghana, we would like to make our personal contribution to a more sustainable sanitation infrastructure with our Public Health & Water Brigade. Therefore 12 students of the SDI will travel to Ghana for one week in October 2019. In the community of Ekumpoano we will build the urgently needed water systems and sanitary units (with biodigester). Together with local bricklayers, technicians and families, we can improve the living conditions of the village community in a sustainable way. In addition, we will give workshops at the local school in Ekumpoano to inform the children about the basics of hygiene in a playful way.
In summary, we do not only bring our manpower and the necessary financing for the purchase of the materials, but also strengthen the cultural exchange. In the long run, we help people to help themselves.

    Schedule of the Brigade
Day 1: Arrival in Ghana & first meeting with the community
Day 2-5: Construction of sanitary units with biodigester & water pipes
Day 6: Workshops at the school of Ekumpoano
Day 7: Cultural Tour & Workshops

Why do we have to rely on your support?
Since the project Ghana 2019 is financed exclusively by donations, we are dependent on your support. Every committed student has to fundraise a program contribution of 705€ to cover the general project costs (material, staff, etc.) as well as the costs for accommodation, food and insurance. In addition, there are the travel costs from Munich to Ghana.
This type of financing makes it possible for Global Brigades to keep the administrative costs extremely low (8%), so that the majority of the donations can be invested efficiently in the project. All student members of GB work voluntarily, independently and without any economic interest in their work. Thus, we guarantee that every Euro donated to us will go directly into the realization of the project Ghana 2019.
