    About this project

Harald G. from borderline-europe Menschenrechte ohne Grenzen e.V. is responsible for this project
Chamseddine Marzoug is a former fisherman who lives and works in Zarzis in Tunisia, and volunteers with the Red Crescent. For many years now, Chamseddine has witnessed death and despair resulting from the attempts of migrants to cross the Mediterranean Sea. Often, he is called when migrant bodies are found, washed up on the Tunisian shore. Chamseddine collects the human remains and gives them a dignified burial. Often, the corpses cannot be identified, and this is why he refers to the cemetery that he maintains as the ‘Cemetery of the Unknown'.

Chamseddine does a job that nobody wants to do. He does not receive money, he voluntarily provides dignified burials to hundreds of humans who have lost their lives while searching for freedom in Europe but died along the way – children, women, men. We want to support Chamseddine and raise money so that he can continue his valuable work. Chamseddine needs financial support to maintain the cemetery, to transport the bodies from the beaches to the cemetery and to cover other costs, for example for tools.

We hope you will support Chamseddine and donate as much as you can so that the ‘Cemetery of the Unknown’ remains a place where the dead from the Mediterranean Sea can find their final place to rest.

Chamseddine's work has been covered by international media. For a further read, check:
