Anyone who thinks back to their own school days remembers that the school toilets were usually "disgusting" and they wanted to use these as little as possible. At the "Life Trust School Waya" this is no different. However, since there are only four squat toilets for over 420 students and staff, the conditions are many times worse. There is no flushing, instead you have to take water from a water barrel that stands in front of the small building in a cut-open juice container to wash away your faeces. This lack of hygiene is extremely problematic and in the rainy season this system is hardly tolerable as cholera can then break out in various parts of the town. The fact that the sinks are located in front of the toilet house is also very unpleasant for the older girl students in the time of their menstruation, because in the Zambian culture especially the young men should not notice such things.
For these reasons, Life Trust is planning new toilets for its Life Trust School Waya. A total of 18 toilets and even 4 showers are planned as part of the new building. The sinks are then no longer outside, but inside the toilet block and there is water flushing at every toilet. Since there is no municipal sewage system in the area of the school, two large septic tanks each with two chambers are excavated, in which the faeces hygienically degrade from itself.
To realize this project and to offer a clean and hygienic environment to the Waya compound kids, which also contributes significantly to the well-being of children and adolescents, Life Trust requires a total of € 20,000. This sum includes all construction, material and labour costs:
- Septic Tanks: 2,000 €
- Foundation: 1,800 €
- Shell: 3,600 €
- Roof: 3.700 €
- Electricity: 400 €
- Sanitary facilities: 3.700 €
- Worker: 4,800 €
Please help us with your donation to provide the pupils from Waya clean toilets. We and the children will thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
