    About this project

    A. Wildt from Die Zauberlaterne is responsible for this project
The Magic Lantern is an international film club for children aged 6 to 12. It aims to introduce children to the pleasure of discovering great films… not on a couch but in a real cinema providing a magical setting for film.

Discovering the world of cinema while having fun!

In today’s world, children are exposed to visual media at an increasingly young age yet they do not possess the tools with which to analyse these visual images. At a time where visual media is increasing its cultural and social influence on society, this observation deserves reflection, especially considering the fact that visual media education is virtually non-existent in today’s primary school curriculum. For this reason we have set out to promote visual media literacy for children; an education adapted both to their level of knowledge and their interests.

Several days before each session, all children club members receive in the mail a small-illustrated magazine presenting the film to be shown. By reading the magazine, children can prepare for the film showing and become familiar with cinematographic terms. Just before the film, a small theatre show or skit is presented. This humorous presentation, different at each session, explains the particularities of the film to be shown and prepares the children for the discoveries of the cinema.

It is a magic formula: Once a month, club members are invited to attend an age appropriate, quality film in a real cinema. Exclusively for children (without their parents) but supervised by competent and responsible adults, children get a taste of the major emotions of cinema which parallel those we experience in our daily lives: laughter, fantasy, some sadness and a bit of fear. These special moments shared with their comrades are memorable experiences for the children. Each season includes films from different eras of cinema. Presented in chronological order, children observe the evolutionary process of the seventh art and the various means used by filmmakers to impress their audience. After a few sessions children begin to understand that films are a form of living art that change over time. The film programming is conceived for a six-year period. Each season children discover nine films illustrating the richness and diversity of cinema.

The seasonal membership card costs about as much as two individual cinema tickets. A reduced price is charged for additional members of the same family. The low-cost membership allows access to almost everyone.

The Magic Lantern constitutes a unique social experience. Attending the film showings in the company of hundreds of other children their own age, club members learn to respect their peers, to grow within a collective framework and to behave responsibly in the absence of their parents.
