My name is Julia Stubberud, I am 18 years old and have been spending a "Voluntary Social Year" in Colombia since August after finishing my A-Level exams. I work as an educational assistant at a public girls' school in Tunja and support both -teachers and pupils - in English lessons and prepare projects for the students. Tunja is located about 150 km northeast of the capital Bogotá. During my stay I live in a Colombian host family which takes good care of me. Projects such as these offer more opportunities, especially for disadvantaged children and young people. I, too, benefit from my work abroad, for example by expanding my intercultural competencies and my language skills and by getting an insight into the development cooperation. The German Red Cross, which leads this project, asks the volunteers to raise funds so these kind of opportunities can be continued in the future.
