Thankful for the privilege of having good free education and incredible opportunities as an EU citizen, I wanted to give something back. To people for whom it is much more difficult to get education.
And only because they happened to be born on the other side of the world.
I spend most of my time on Mombacho Volcano, where I give English lessons to the guides, whose income from tourism is used to finance the biological research. I work in this area as well: I help analyzing weather data and monitoring birds (especially collibries) or the endemic salamander.
Mombacho is the only cloud forest on the Pacific side of Nicaragua, a special refuge for fauna and flora, and therefore particularly worthy to be protected. There are several species that can't be found anywhere else in the world!
Unfortunately, the awareness of how important it is to preserve Nicaragua's beautiful nature is often rather low here.
That is why another focus of my project is free environmental education in schools, with the aim of giving children a feeling for the environment and the major problems in this area.
In the future I will also teach English in an elementary school and try to improve the children's opportunities.
As a "Weltwärts" volunteer of the Red Cross, I am also committed to intercultural exchange, so I try to be an ambassador of Germany in Nicaragua and a Central American one in Germany.
I also inform about my work, my experiences and much more on my blog (only in German, but there're a lot of pictures too!): felixinnicaragua.wordpress.com
Thank you dearly for your support!
