Schülerpaten Berlin wants to improve educational opportunities for Berlin kids with a migration background by setting up one-on-one mentoring between these children and German speaking volunteers.
The mentor visits their mentee once a week to help them with their schoolwork. The mentor often also provides support with career orientation and everyday worries. The mentoring pair also receives financial support so they can plan joint activities and trips, promoting integration.
The mentoring is a great way to overcome the adversities children with a migrant background still have to face in the German education system! At the end of lower school they are on average lagging behind by a year. They are twice as likely to leave school without graduating than children without a migrant background. They are in need of external support as their parents often lack the language skills to support them and teachers are overwhelmed with increasing class sizes.
Mentors can help these children seize opportunities and develop their potential!
Schülerpaten Berlin was founded in 2009 and has matched about 800 mentors and mentees since then! We are a team of 30 volunteers and one full-time coordinator and have won many prizes for our work including the Google Impact Challenge.
We kindly ask for your donations, so we can match even more mentoring couples! We need funding to advertise for potential mentors, to organize trainings for our mentors as well as events for the mentoring couples and to provide the mentoring couple with a monthly allowance for their joint outings. And of course we also need funding to pay our coordinator and our rent.
