Funded A New Dormitory

Tareto Maa was founded as a community-based project in April 2009 by Gladys Naing’olai Kiranto whose aim was to support the children of her community and especially to spare girls from FGM which she had undergone herself.

Tareto Maa (meaning “Help for the Maasai”) is a grassroots nonprofit in Kenya, East Africa, whose objective is to empower the local community while eradicating the tradition of female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriages within the Maasai people. The organization is located in Shartuka/Kilgoris, Transmara District. We raised enough funds in 2012 to purpose-build a dormitory for 50 girls. However, the demand for refuge has outstripped our infrastructure. There are currently 129 girls living and sleeping in this dorm. this overcrowding is perilous to their health and well-being. In addition, the sanitation has been placed under severe pressure due to overcrowding. We need to build a new dormitory and sanitation block to give these girls the best chance at a future.
