On the 5th of April 2012, a murder that to this day remains inexplicable and unsolved took place in the Neukölln district Buckow/Britz: Opposite the Neukölln hospital, Burak was standing and chatting with friends. An unknown white man purposefully approaches the group of migrant youth and fires several shots at them. Burak, 22 at the time, was hit and died – his friends Alex and Jamal were seriously injured and were only saved by emergency operations. They are still suffering from the consequences.
The young people had never before seen the perpetrator. He didn’t speak a word, shot, and left the scene. His cold-blooded actions were reminiscent of a public execution. Burak was murdered a few months after the “National Socialist Underground” (NSU) uncovered themselves. The parallels in the circumstances of the crimes are more than clear. There is a lot of insecurity to this day on the streets because of the murder of Burak Bektaş, above all among young people who are affected by racism, since the perpetrator still runs free. There has still been no clarification from the police or the authorities, now almost 5 years after the murder. Instead of learning from the NSU disaster and taking a racist motivation into consideration, the police are still investigating “in all directions”.
To keep alive the memory of Burak, we want to create a visible and living memorial near the crime scene. It should serve as a place of remembrance and meeting for friends and relatives, as well as publicly pointing out that this crime has yet to be solved. As a place of learning, it should contribute to the discussion on unresolved, potentially racist murders and on everyday racism.
We call for solidarity with the family and friends of Burak. Support the establishment of a memorial site for Burak!
