My name is Isabelle. I am 18 years old, and I come from Frankfurt, Germany.
Starting in the middle of August 2016, I am going to spend a volunteer social year working in Colombia.
More precisely, my journey will take me to Villa de Leyva, a gorgeous, small, colonial town near Tunja, in the Departamento Boyacá. The organization that I will be working collaboratively with is called Volunta. It is a subsidiary of the German Red Cross. For more information visit www.volunta.de.
The partner organization in Colombia is call Fundacion 180 Ramos de Buitrago. I will be working with the site at Tunja. The foundation’s goal is to foster the upbringing and education of disadvantaged children and adolescents in the Departmento Boyaca in Columbia. For more information visit www.fundacion180.org.
My older sister participated in this project, and a video of their volunteer work can be seen at /watch?v=oUXAplY3w3Q&feature=youtu.be.
Together with other volunteers from Germany I will be working in one of the schools in the
Departamento Boyacá as part of the project, to support teachers mainly during the English lessons.
Furthermore, we will be supporting projects, which aim for cultural exchange and for motivating the students to learn new languages.
Besides that, I will get the chance to experience Colombia and its people up close and delve into a new culture. The best part of it is that all of us volunteers will live in Colombian families and, therefore, we will be able to experience everyday Colombian life.
My volunteer service is financially subsidized by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The German Government supports the international volunteer services only partially through subsidies, with the result that the expenses of my stay in Colombia are not completely covered. For that reason, I would like to collect donations for my programme (program), to make at least a small contribution, so that in the future Volunta will also be able to deploy volunteers for developmental ends all over the world.
The costs of a voluntary social year in a foreign country consist of: accommodation, airfare, allowance, international travel expenses, workshops, educational companion and mentoring, insurance, administration and support of the partner organization.
For those reasons I am trying to collect 2.940,- Euros ($3,256- USD) for my volunteer social year and I am very delighted for every small donation.
I will be blogging about my experiences and work in Colombia to inform my donors, family and friends about my volunteer year. It will be in German, but there might be some pretty pictures to look at: https://isaencolombia.blogspot.de/
I am already thankful for everyone who supports me and for those who are giving me the chance to spend a volunteer social year in Colombia!
