How To Build Social Media Buzz Among Volunteers

Here at Driving Participation, we’re celebrating volunteers the whole month of April. This week, I brought in Karen Bantuveris, CEO of VolunteerSpot, to discuss how nonprofits are using social networks to identify and build relationships with potential volunteers.

With the emergence of social media, the environment around volunteering has become more dynamic.  Social networks allow organizations and nonprofits new opportunities to engage with volunteers. This technology is not only about helping volunteers with projects and initiatives, it’s also opening up a conversation. The key is using the right content to engage with your audience, and recruiting those individuals once you’ve built that relationship.

Your organization’s community is made up of people who believe in your cause and mission. Start by recognizing what resonates with the supporters you already have. Find everything from infographics, to video that captures what your supporters are passionate about, and use social media to share that content. Show them the value of following—the stories, tips and images they can expect to see—and educate them about the best ways to show support.
