    About this project

    A. Fallabrino from Karumbe is responsible for this project
Uruguayan waters constitutes a feeding and developmental ground for five species of sea turtles: green turtle (Chelonia mydas), loggerhead (Caretta caretta), leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) and hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata). As a result of meat consumption, eggs harvest, incidental capture in fishing gears and habitat degradation and destruction, these species are in risk of extintion at a global scale. The studies developed by Karumbé between 2001-2005 highlighted Cerro Verde and La Coronilla Islands (Rocha), as one of the most important foraging and developmental areas for sea turtles. Although incidental capture by fisheries is one of the main threats, interaction with solid marine debris can also be an important factor of mortality. Since the use of plastics, the main component of solid marine debris, continues to increase, so does the amount of plastics polluting the marine environment. Preliminary studies among sea turtles in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean showed that the main stranding cause is the interaction with fisheries and solid marine debris , the occurrence and abundance of marine debris in the gastrointestinal tract and entenglement of individuals with ghost nets along the Uruguayan coast has been increasing. Providing training to students and proffesionals on sea turtles research and conservation techniques at foraging grounds results a priority. Therefore, since its creation Karumbé has provided training on sea turtles research and conservation to more than 250 students and proffesionals from more than 20 different nations of America and Europe.

    Objectives
-Study green turtles ecology and the main threats that affects sea turtles survivorship at the foraging and developmental area of Cerro Verde, Uruguay.
-Determine the main causes of death and evaluate how fishing activities and solid marine debris contributes to sea turtles mortality.
-Rehabilitate and reintroduce injured and/or sick animals as result of the incidental capture by fisheries and marine debris ingestion.
-To provide fast and effective action that will best serve the well-being of the sick stranded and incidental captured turtles.
-To give a complete veterinary assistance to the individuals in the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Centre.
-Raise awareness among the local comnunity and general public on the conservation status of sea turtles populations.
-Increase public awareness among the current sea turtles status, main threats they are suffering and the critical value, at the national and international level, of Cerro Verde as a foraging and developmental area.
-Involve local communities in conservation activities in order to reduce sea turtles mortality.
-Provide training on sea turtles biology and conservation on foraging areas to national and foreign students and proffesionals.
