New Roof for a School in Sri Lanka

    Gadaladeniya Maha Vidyalaya School
A project from Gadaladeniya Maha Vidyalaya School in Pilimathalawa, Gadaladeniya, Sri Lanka
Help us to fix the collapsing roof of a school in Gadaldeniya, Sri Lanka, in order that the students can be taught in a safe class room. At the moment several classes have to learn in the main hall at the same time. Could you call this school?

    About this project

Thomas K. from Gadaladeniya Maha Vidyalaya School is responsible for this project
Imagine a school, in which students of different classes sit in the assembly hall. They are supposed to learn how to read, write and calculate separately but imagine what will happen when you hear few teachers talk at the same time about different subjects?

On hot days the temperature goes up to 30 degrees and more. The wooden chairs, the students sit on, are old, hard and uncomfortable. Would you call this a school?

Unfortunately, that is what a school is like for about 430 students at the Gadaladeniya Maha Vidyalaya School in Udunuwara near Kandy in Sri Lanka.

The problem: The wooden construction of the roof above the class room of the sixth grade (about 30 students) is about to collapse. The beams are ramshackle. The temporarily built-in planks are nearly breaking.

Because of this the principal had to close down this class room and transfer the lessons to the main hall.

However, as the other six class rooms are in no much better a condition, more and more students have to be taught in the main hall. Thus more and more different classes have lessons there and it gets increasingly harder to concentrate.

    How can you help?

With your support we want to raise enough donations for the school to build a new roof for a class room. Local carpenters put the cost at about 200,000 Sri Lanka Rupees, which is about 1.250 Euro or 1.400 USD.

To build a new roof for the school we depend on your support, as the amount needed is too big to be raised by ourselves. Every single donation, may it be small or big, will help to reach our goal.

If you are willing to donate just 5 Dollars, this will be enough to buy 4 beams each 3 meters long for the roof. For the same amount, you will contribute 8 pounds of nails. Isn't that great?
Thus, little by little you can build a whole new roof for the students in Sri Lanka. Thank you for your support!

    Why are we doing this?

Our friends Tharindu and Dakshika Kandewatte live nearby the school. Tharindu’s mother works there as a teacher. They are taking care that all donations will arrive safely and will be used for the restoration of the school roof in an efficient and sustainable way.

Tharindu and my wife Jessica are pen pals since 15 years. We were invited to the wedding of our friend Tharindu and Dakshika last year. We learned to know Sri Lanka and kind of fell in love with the country and the people. A few months later our friends came to our wedding to Germany. This was when we had the idea to support people in Sri Lanka, who aren't as lucky as we are. So we began to fund some smaller projects - also with the support of the local Lions Club. You can read more about our friendship in a German newspaper article on the web at: http://goo.gl/OVR1my

Once again, Thank you for your support. It means a lot to us.
