About this project

Hello you all

My name is Pia, I am 28 years and I will go to Cape Town, South Africa in September to work as a volunteer for one year. The exchange is organized by the non-profit organization SAGE Net e.V. (South African German Network).

The project I will volunteer at is called "Zip Zap Circus School" - a social circus, which was founded in 1992 in Cape Town, to inspire children and young people and help to enable a new culture of peaceful coexistence in South Africa.

The vision of Zip Zap is simple: children of different origin, color, culture, etc. will be shown that they are not different because of external formalities. Many children come from the nearby townships. By attending Zip Zap they are off the street and learn that everyone has a talent. Zip Zap wants to help children to learn to dream and form those dreams into reality. Children that started years ago at Zip Zap are now teachers of new Zip Zap members, working in the movie or music industry and support Zip Zap sustainable.

Furthermore Zip Zap collaborates with health care facilities in the townships. Once to twice a week we go to the townships and perform our shows and let the children become part of the performance. We want to motivate the children with the HIV virus to come into the centers to take their medicine regularly.

My job at Zip Zap? Trapeze dancer? Prima ballerina? Clown? Bad idea! My main task will be to support the office team: fundraising, sponsorship, marketing, scheduling, budgeting, etc. – tasks I am familiar with, but who knows what will happen in one year, maybe I discover at last my/a true talent.
