About this project

Over 2 million children in Germany live in poverty. For many of them, this means no breakfast before kindergarten or school, no money for a warm meal at lunchtime, or not having enough nutritious food. In addition, they often cannot afford to spend their free time with peers e.g. going to the movies or swimming, and easily become outsiders especially if they receive little or no social support from home.

Children can hardly defend themselves against the circumstances in which they grow up. They are in particular need of direct and uncomplicated help. Many local food banks cooperate with kindergartens and schools, especially in socially disadvantaged areas, and offer children and young people living in poverty sandwiches and fruit or a free or low-cost warm lunch. Some of our food banks even offer extras like cooking classes where they learn to prepare healthy meals,  a space where they can play and simply be kids or where they find a caring adult to lend them an ear.

Currently well over a hundred food banks run special projects for children and youth. However, many food banks lack the funds to develop and expand their programs for children e.g. to equip kitchens appropriately or to provide tutoring and other resources. Tafel Deutschland e.V. has set up a fund to provide targeted support for these initiatives.
