    About this project

    S. Jacobsen from District Kunst- und Kulturförderung gGmbH is responsible for this project
I made a little original art book that invites young people as well as adults to reflect on violence in films, violence in society and their own personal relationship to violence. The book functions as a catalogue for my art project DIRECT APPROACH and serves at the same time as a practical working guide on how to put an always current and relevant topic such as violence on the agenda and both creatively, theoretically and practically work with the topic.

The book, which I made in collaboration with language psychologist Anne Uhrskov, is based on the social design of DIRECT APPROACH, an art project about film and violence, that I began early 2012 in order to provide a platform for individual discussions for and with people about violence, taboos and ethics.

The guidebook consists of several interviews and statements on violence and includes a recipe for the art project DIRECT APPROACH in a concise and clear step-by-step instruction which shows users of the book how they can interview each other about the most horrible film scene experience and how the film scene can be remembered down to the smallest detail. The method focuses on identification and understanding of violence in films and reality and the goal of the book is to become an inspiration and useful tool for schools and other social institutions who wish to work with the topic violence.

The social design of "DIRECT APPROACH, THE GUIDE BOOK“ is currently with great success being tested in cooperation with DISTRICT Kunst - und Kulturförderung and collaboration with Gangway in a 5 month workshop for young people between 13-25 years old in Berlin. The young participants are the producers of interviews, filmposters, films and an exhibition. Their statements and developed perspectives on how identities are defined within discourses of violence, will finally be opened for a broad public reflection in an exhibition in DISTRICT on July 5th.

At the time of the exhibition, the guide book is to be translated into German and be available in print version on a website where future users can share their experiences, works and statements.

In order to realize my project and cover the costs for design and printing of 750 copies, I am looking for people to support my project with a donation. With the help of your donations, I will be able to cover the demand and achieve an intensive distribution and use of the manual!
