About this project

Annabell Gottschalk from Tierfreunde Lesbos e.V. is responsible for this project
TNR Lesvos is a project under the auspices of Tierfreunde Lesbos e.V. and is dedicated to addressing the problem of the overpopulation of stray cats on the third-largest Greek island of Lesvos, particularly in the capital, Mytilini.

To increase the reach of our project, we want to build on our efforts from last year. Many people have now recognized that sterilizations are the key to healthier cat populations and that cats should not reproduce uncontrollably.

Through our pilot project in 2024, we were able to neuter over 500 cats from 90 colonies. The exact number of cat lovers involved is hard to determine, as catching the cats is often a community project involving families, neighbors, and friends.

Our project is aimed precisely at these people. The emotional burden associated with animal suffering affects not only individuals but the entire population. Therefore, we want to provide all cat lovers on Lesvos who want to tackle this problem with a contingent of affordable neuterings.

Be a part of our project and make many cats and cat lovers happy!

Our motto for 2024 was "Save 1 Stray per Day," aiming for 365 neuterings in a year. From 365, we achieved over 520 neuterings. Therefore, we thought: "From 1 make 2," and following the motto "Save 2 Strays per Day in 2025," we aim to neuter a total of 730 cats.

Every donation, no matter how small, helps us achieve our goal.

Our strategy: We will continue working on the colonies started in 2024 until 80% of the cats are neutered, and we will catch and neuter additional colonies. We aim for a 100% neutering rate of female cats. With the experience gained and the support of the community, we are confident that we can achieve this goal and ensure the sustainability of the project.

Our project is based on two pillars:

  1. Neutering program with local veterinarians: Citizens can have 'their' stray cats neutered at participating veterinarians at a low price (15 euros per cat, 25 euros for heavily pregnant cats). Each cat receives an ear tag and anti-parasite treatment.

  2. Neutering campaigns with volunteer veterinarians: Once or twice a year, we will organize neutering campaigns where many cats can be neutered for free. These campaigns are carried out in collaboration with the local municipality of Mytilene.

Our goal is to offer 30 neuterings at a reduced price each month. (In the months when the neutering campaigns take place, this offer is not available.)
