About this project
Since then, well over 1050 young people, mostly in skilled trades, have been successfully trained as journeymen.
A total of 22 craftsmen and educators are currently training 148 young people to become electronics technicians, carpenters, gardeners, painters, mechatronics technicians and office clerks.
Young people who have no or poor school qualifications; who are disadvantaged because of their nationality or skin color; who have had problems with drug use or have gone a bad path; who have to deal with difficulties in the family or other problems; who have not found an apprenticeship because of their gender or as a single parent; who have been traumatized by war and abscondence, find the opportunity to complete an apprenticeship successfully with us.
Teenagers and young adults, many with a migration background and/or learning disabilities, looking for apprenticeships (orientation courses) and already in training at ajw Hamburg, encounter job-related mathematics in placement tests (competency assessments), in vocational school, at the apprenticeship and in the journeyman's examination.
People with learning barriers in particular often suffer from exam anxiety and some only have a rudimentary level of the required basic knowledge. Many participants do not like or understand math and this causes frustration or rejection.
To decipher word problems, practice and training are needed so that the corresponding keywords and patterns become recognizable. Mathe4Job is intended to help refresh or build up basic knowledge of mathematics for the job and to reduce and, in the best case, eliminate the fear of math problems.
With successful training in a recognized profession, young people open the door to long-term social security and integration into society.
