About this project

Annabell Gottschalk from Tierfreunde Lesbos e.V. is responsible for this project
There are countless stray animals on the island of Lesvos, most of which are cats. The population is constantly growing as the animals find food at rubbish dumps or are fed by local residents. The suffering is huge, as the overpopulation and poor food quality cause pandemics to spread and animals are run over by cars or poisoned.

We are not only concerned about animal suffering, but also about alleviating the suffering of the people who care about the animals. Due to the large number of cats and lack of financial resources, most people's hands are tied.

The only humane way to reduce the stray cat population is large-scale neutering campaigns (TNR - Trap/Neuter/Repeat). Their effectiveness has been scientifically proven, provided the castrations are organised and carried out sustainably (source:  https://www.pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas.2119000119).

Save 1 Stray per Day.  We want to neuter an average of one cat/male cat every day in 2024. The animals will be from colonies where we aim to catch 100% of the females and 70% of the total colony.

In addition to neutering, each animal will be treated with anti-parasite medication and medically checked. Most street animals only see a vet once in their lives and we want to release them back onto the streets in the best possible conditions.

Our donation target of €21,900 is made up of the sum of 365 x €60. 60 Euro cover the cost of neutering and anti-parasite treatment for one animal and provide a small financial back-up to pay for other necessary medical procedures (dental treatment, eye removal, amputation, etc.) for individual animals.

After some research and calculations, we realised that we could set up a neutering clinic with the same budget and run it for about 3 months. In these 3 months, the same amount of money could be used to treat around 600 animals.

Our donation target remains the same, the first target is the neutering clinic - if the plan does not work out, we will of course bring 365 cats from monitored colonies for neutering.

Through the neutering clinic we could provide the population with easy access to castrations and in turn achieve a cataloguing of the existing cat colonies. At the same time, TNR projects organised by volunteers and animal lovers will run to make entire neighbourhoods/villages "stray-free" over the next few years.

Please help us to reduce the stray animal suffering on the third largest Greek island in the long term. We would like to start as soon as possible at the beginning of 2024 - before the next flood of kittens. One neutered cat "saves" hundreds of kitten lives. Spay one - Save 100.
