We train rats to save lives. APOPO is a social enterprise that researches, develops and disseminates detection rats technology for humanitarian purposes. We are a registered Belgian NGO, with our headquarters in Tanzania.
Our vision: To solve pressing humanitarian challenges with detection rats technology.
Our mission: To develop detection rats technology to provide solutions for global problems and inspire positive social change.
APOPO currently employs over 200 staff for our in-country operations, and has over 300 rats in various stages of breeding, research, training or implementation. Our African giant pouched rats are important members of our team, and the driving force behind our life-saving mission. We call them HeroRATs.
Our Mine Action team in Mozambique has already returned over 2.5 million square meters of land to the local population, with the help of HeroRATs. At our Tuberculosis Detection Center in Tanzania, HeroRATs provide second-line screening of TB samples. Each week, they identify 10-15 new TB-positive patients that were previously missed by microscopy.
