About us

To change the miserable conditions of school sanitation in Kitale Kenya, a group of benefactors have joined hands and founded the non-profit association, Hand of Progress e.V. in Germany. By building new sanitary facilities in the rural village of Mukuyu , we want to break the vicious circle of diseases related to poor sanitation, inadequate hygiene and stinking latrine odours, and improve children's chances of growing up healthier and with dignity. Our work is based on christian convictions of being our brother's keeper and operates within the UN Sustainable Development Goals framework . These global goals seek to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

Particular attention is paid to the participation of the local community and churches together with the involvement of the county government and the Ministries of Health and Education.

Mukuyu Primary school toilets launched

  Grace K.  12 October 2018 at 06:37 PM

The children could hardly wait to inspect their new clean toilets on September 11, 2018 the long awaited "toilets opening day"!  They were not only fascinated by the nice friendly colours on the walls of their sanitation facility prestine environment but also by the presence of water taps with running water in them.  With the help of well wishers, Hand of Progress e.V. has built a total of 22 toilets with a urinal for boys and a bathroom for girls, a septic tank and dug a water borehole to enable hand washing and general hygiene for the 700 children of Mukuyu Primary school. However, water shortage has forced us to dig a second borehole which is in the process of completion.  We also intend to take advantage of the future rainy seasons by collecting rain water. We thank you for your continued support. The next school is waiting, a boarding  school with about 450 girls, that is also in desperate need for safer hygienic toilets.
