Abalimi Bezekhaya - Farmers of Home

Good Day everybody,

I am volunteering for a year for this wonderful organisation. We have home and community gardens in the Cape Flats (Philippi, Nyanga, Crossroads, Khayelitsha,Langa eg.) in the wide country South Africa. We are currently trying to encourage the farmers to adopt 'new' organic methods of farming (like soil fertilisation, natural pest elimination, quality control) to improve the health of their soil and the level of production so they can move out of a subsistence level of farming to one of an established livelihood. We provide monthly training sessions and the farmers are tested on their knowledge afterwards in a quiz. As motivation to come and implement these things we would like to provide for the first prize a complete rain coat for the farmers (hat, rain jacket and trouser, gumboots and gardening gloves, which keep them warm and are water resistant), the second prize are gumboots for the garden group and the third one are getting the gardening gloves. For all farmers we want to provide a manual with all topics we discussed in the workshops and give to this booklet. We translate it to Xhosa and make a lot of pictures for a better understanding for our farmers. They are great and doing really well, but the conditions here are also tough and hard. The soil is the pure beach sand, the sun in summer is very hot, the wind blows around and in winter it is cold and rainy.


Please help us provide these farmers with these basic needs.
