Leona’s 30th Birthday : Donations instead of gifts :)

For my birthday this year I wanted to create a way for you to take part in something that matters deeply to me. 

I feel a profound sense of gratitude for the life I’ve lived so far: the freedom, the safety, the opportunities, and the people I love. At the same time, I’m very aware that this is not only the result of personal choices, but also of having been born in the right place, at the right time. 

I often carry a quiet discomfort (even guilt) about how little I can actually do for the causes that matter to me. Those who know me well know that I struggle with digital activism. Reposting a story from my phone, from a cozy couch in Kreuzberg, often feels too easy, almost performative, and disconnected from the realities others are living. 

Among everything happening in the world right now, the situations in Gaza, Sudan, and Iran are very present in my mind. They constantly remind me how fragile safety, dignity, and basic rights are, especially for women. I can’t support everything at once, and I don’t want to pretend I can. 

So for my 30th birthday, I chose to focus my action in one concrete place. 

This fundraiser supports BFF – Frauen gegen Gewalt, an organization working to protect women from violence and to strengthen support structures for women affected by abuse here in Germany. Supporting this cause feels like a way to act locally, while staying deeply aware of the wider realities that shape it. 

Violence against women in all its forms, whether through institutional structures, poorly applied laws, abuse of power, organizations, or individual actions has affected me over the years, as well as many of the incredible women by my side. This is why I chose this cause: it is one I understand deeply, and one I feel legitimate speaking up about, as I have done in the past.

Pour mon annif cette année j’ai eu envie de créer une cagnotte autour d’une cause qui me tient profondément à cœur.

Je ressens une immense gratitude pour la vie que j’ai vécue jusqu’à présent : la liberté, la sécurité, les opportunités et bien entourée. En même temps, je suis très consciente que cela tient aussi au fait d’être née au bon endroit, au bon moment.

Les situations à Gaza, au Soudan et en Iran me touchent beaucoup et me rappellent à quel point la sécurité, la dignité et les droits fondamentaux sont fragiles, en particulier pour les femmes. Malheureusement je ne peux pas soutenir toutes les causes à la fois, et je ne veux pas faire semblant de le pouvoir.

Pour mes 30 ans, j’ai donc choisi de concentrer mon action sur un point concret.

Cette cagnotte soutient BFF – Frauen gegen Gewalt, une organisation qui œuvre pour la protection des femmes contre les violences et pour le renforcement des structures d’accompagnement des femmes victimes de violences en Allemagne. Agir localement me semble être une manière juste et honnête de m’engager pour une organisation qui me tient particulièrement à coeur tout en restant consciente des réalités plus larges qui nous entourent.

Zu meinem Geburtstag in diesem Jahr wollte ich eine Spendenaktion ins Leben rufen, die mir sehr am Herzen liegt.

Ich empfinde große Dankbarkeit für das Leben, das ich bisher führen durfte: für Freiheit, Sicherheit, Möglichkeiten und die Menschen, die ich liebe. Gleichzeitig ist mir bewusst, dass dies auch damit zu tun hat, zur richtigen Zeit am richtigen Ort geboren zu sein.

Die Situationen in Gaza, im Sudan und im Iran beschäftigen mich sehr und machen mir immer wieder deutlich, wie fragil Sicherheit, Würde und grundlegende Rechte sind, insbesondere für Frauen. Ich kann nicht alles gleichzeitig unterstützen, und ich möchte nicht so tun, als könnte ich es.

Deshalb habe ich mich zu meinem 30. Geburtstag entschieden, mein Engagement auf einen konkreten Ort zu fokussieren.

Diese Spendenaktion unterstützt BFF – Frauen gegen Gewalt, eine Organisation, die sich für den Schutz von Frauen vor Gewalt und für bessere Unterstützungsstrukturen für betroffene Frauen in Deutschland einsetzt. Lokal zu handeln fühlt sich für mich nach einem ehrlichen und sinnvollen Weg an, Verantwortung zu übernehmen.
