What’s it about

Thank you for visiting The Human Ape Project's fundraising event at betterplace.org!

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The project is a decade-long socio-scientific research for sustainability of a group of human species on the foothills of Himalayas with their own culture, tradition, language, identity, religion, healing practices and civilization, but are on the verge of near-extinction.

The modern world noticed them less than a decade ago, in the remote foothills of the Himalayas in central Nepal.

At the best of their times, about 300 years ago, they were reportedly 400 in number. When first noticed in 2000, they were 75. Now, their population has dwindled down to mere 59.

Because of their nomadic lifestyle, characterized by their disinterest in farming and loving to live in temporary fences in deep forest in solitude, they are literally heralded as "The Human Apes".

The UN, UNESCO and the government of Nepal recognized this group as the most vulnerable among the 57 endangered ethnicities in Nepal, yet little has been done to preserve and sustain this ethnic group and their civilization.

The project is carried out so far with sole financial support and leadership of Dr. Sichendra Bista since 2000, but with the help of a battery of experts (sociologists, anthropologists, nutritionists, statisticians, film crews, surveyors and logisticians).

The project is the world's first pioneering cumulative risk assessment of the human population in order to figure out a formula/method to quantify the vulnerability factors of human extinction for a sustainable future. Several researches have been carried out to sustain flora and fauna, but not for a human population so far. Extinction of a human species is more taxing than other floral and faunal species. Unlike in the case of flora and fauna, according to Dr. Bista, extinction of human population also wipes out indigenous wisdom, language, culture, social behaviours and way of living among others.
