Running a half-marathon - for youth in Uganda
Already 48 donations 🤍
What’s it about
Race day will be June 4th!!
To put things into perspective.... War is raging in Europe - and I am amazed by the support people are providing by organizing truck loads of food and medicine to the Ukraine, donating money or organizing support in their neighborhood. When I planned my pledge for Right to Play, the war was far away. In spite of all the support provided already for the Ukrainian people, I am hopeful that this humanitarian crisis uncovers the awareness in many of us to the importance of looking beyond our bubble and realize the power of solidarity with others.
Why did I chose Right to Play? Right to Play focuses on young people, introducing play based and participatory education in schools, as well as support early childhood development in schools and refugee camps - you might not know that Uganda hosts over 1.4 million refugees from war zones in South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Such news hardly make the headlines anymore in Europe.
But I want to talk more about opportunities: I have seen first hand how effective support of youngsters can be when I was working with young coffee farmers in Central America, Colombia an East Africa within a program called "Coffee Kids". Uncovering the creativity and spirit of these young people and supporting them to realize their dreams was more than inspiring. This is what Right to Play can also do with their work.
My little half-marathon and your support can show that we take interest in the lives of people with less chances in life - and I hope it can builds small human bridges of humanity between people from different continents that help to prevent conflicts and war.
I will keep you updated on my progress!!
Thanks for your support!

Good morning -
I am still flashed from yesterday’s run, the atmosphere and cheering along the course, the heat, the hills and the feeling to realize having made a FULL MARATHON!!! Yes, for all those who donated for a half marathon: you got a full marathon for your money!!
Some of the other athletes told me to give it a try and go for 42k although the furthest I have run so far was 18k around the Alster… so…until 28 km I felt great and then I hit “the wall” - and the hills killed my legs. So, there was as quite a bit of walking on a course with a sum of close to 800 m climbs!?! I did the course under 6 hours, but time did not matter.
The next marathon will definitely be a flat course 😀 - and indeed, there are plans for the next one with a few athletes from this run: Myanmar, the temples of Bagan!! Oh and of course a half marathon in Amsterdam in October with my buddy Camiel!
It was an amazing week, many new friends, from Uganda and many other parts of the world - and it seems that I will continue running although it always hated it… but it is quite interesting to get to know your body in such intense situation.
And… thanks so much for your donations! Did you know that 6 is my lucky number? Total amount raised and a 6.666,66 🤩.
I am off to see some elephants, hippos, giraffes now and look forward to seeing you all soon!
#thankful
