Ich laufe für die DKMS - Berlin Marathon 2021

Der Berlin Marathon, einer der zehn größten Marathons der Welt - 42.195 km entlang der sogenannte Blue Line durch die deutsche Hauptstadt laufen, 16 Wochen Training, mein erster Marathon in der World Marathon Majors Series - nicht nur für mich, sondern für einen guten Zweck.

Nach einer absoluten Wettkampf-Durststrecke sieht es so aus, als ob wir Läufer auf die Startlinien gehen dürfen.  Obwohl ich durch die Lotterie einen Platz beim Marathon bekommen habe, wollte ich mehr als nur Laufen.  

Ich unterstütze die Deutsche Knochenmarkspenderdatei (DKMS) im Kampf gegen Blutkrebs! Ich habe mir die Organization ausgesucht, weil mir ihre Arbeit sehr am Herz liegt.  Meine Geschichte fängt mit meiner Oma an, da bei ihr Haarzellenleukämie diagnostiziert wurden.  Leider hat sie 1992 ihren Kampf verloren. Im  November 2020 hörte ich zum ersten mal von einem Baby mit akuter myeloische Leukämie, dessen Familie nach einem Stammzellspender suchte.  Leider hat sie nicht überlebt, aber ihre Geschichte hat mich inspiriert, mich selbst endlich als Stamzellspenderin zu registrieren.

Dieser Hintergrund motivieren mich stark das öffentliche Bewusstsein zum Blutkrebs und von Stammzellen-/Knochenmarkspenden stärken zu wollen.  Ihr könnt mich dabei unterstützen! Jede Spende zählt, denn allein jede Neuregistrierung kostet die DKMS 35 Euro und hilft dabei, Patient*innen zu neuen Lebenschancen zu verhelfen.

Hello, and welcome to my fundraising page! 

After months of seeing numerous running race events get postponed or cancelled, it seems that we are reaching the light at the end of the tunnel! I started my run journey back in November 2018 and since then I dreamed of accomplishing the Abbott World Marathon Majors, a series consisting of six of the largest and most renowned marathons in the world. After a leap of faith and a lot of luck I was drawn and given a starting number for the Berlin Marathon this 26 September 2021.  I am ecstatic to return to a city I once called home and finally run the 42,195 km, following the blue line as it guides me to the finish. 

Charity has been a big part of much of what I have done in my life, so naturally the idea of running in support of an organization immediately played in my head.  I knew that I wanted to choose something in the realm of health, preferably cancer related, and a name that is recognized internationally (seeing as I am an American expat living in Germany).  I am so happy and proud to say I have chosen to support the Bone Marrow Donor Registry DKMS in their fight against Blood Cancer (Leukemia).  

I picked this organization, because I truly believe in this cause and in the work/research they undertake as well as provide.  Leukemia is no stranger in my life as I lost my grandmother to this illness, however it wasn't until the end of 2020 and earlier this year where I truly stepped forward and took action.  I came across a baby who was battling AML as her parents turned to social media, outreaching to the greater public looking for a stem cell donor and further documenting their experience.  Since following their journey, I registered myself as a potential donor and have since been reading literature about blood cancer realizing there is much more that needs to be made aware.  My personal background is what drives me in the effort of binding this fundraising project with my marathon journey.  

With the wide reaching attention I will attract during the 16 week preparation and during the event itself, I truly hope to make as many individuals aware of the work of the DKMS, encourage others to donate what they can, get others to register themselves as possible stem cell donors, and just get the conversation started with the mission of deleting blood cancer.  Every donation truly counts as it will fund a new bone marrow donor’s registration (a cost DKMS covers).  A monetary donation helps DKMS add more lifesaving donors, a vital step at giving a patient a new fighting chance of life - be the hope.
