What’s it about
The project seeks to restore degraded hotspots in Ngangi River Watershed which are critical to the supply of water into National Water Supply Cooperation intake, aiming at mitigating siltation and associated flooding risks thereby improving water quality and flow variability downstream. This will ensure sustainable water supply to Kasese Municipality and beyond. The project will mobilize land owners and engage them in participatory planning and assessment of their plots to identify Sustainable Land Management (SLM) interventions for implementation. The practices will also increase farm productivity and improve community livelihoods upstream. Specifically, interventions will include on-farm Sustainable Land Management practices.
Supporting conservation of this watershed will improve water flow in terms of quality and quantity at the intake point in the next 2 years and also contribute to the government’s commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 6: ‘Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all’and goal number 2: ‘End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture’. Alternative sources of income will increase household income which is in line with the government’s effort of increasing wealth at the household level, also related to SDG 1 ‘end poverty in all its forms everywhere’.
