What’s it about
This year the 2018 GetYourGuide for Good initiative is sponsoring Imagine Foundation e.V., the first German NGO that turns scaling of safe & legal immigration into a reality. Imagine is a team of more than 20 volunteers from 10 countries that was founded with early support from staff at GetYourGuide.
Imagine helps young engineering students and graduates in places like Afghanistan, Egypt and Pakistan find work & life in Europe. They do this by pairing volunteer mentors together with aspiring migrants online and training them with the skills required to successfully apply for jobs in Europe. Once Imagine participants are given a job offer they receive their work visa and move legally and safely to Europe. Imagine currently has 300+ students in their program, has graduated 25+ Fellows and has 3 families already on their way to Europe, all in less than 17 weeks live.
With GYG support Imagine will launch in Afghanistan and train 200 Afghan developers.
Why this matters
Afghanistan is one of the world’s poorest and most unsafe countries to live. But it's also a place of hope and dreams: there is an active, flourishing developer community of thousands of people, more than 20% of them being women. All of them aspire to build their country. Some seek the opportunity to come and work in a country like Germany to grow and develop themselves in engineering environments with people like you. And to, at some point, bring these skills and connections back to their home country to create jobs & prosperity there.
What our donations do
With our 2018 GetYourGuide for Good initiative we will fund Imagine’s launch into Afghanistan. If we meet our sponsorship goal, Imagine will have the funds to train at least 200 developers in places like Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif, and help people find job opportunities in Europe. Maybe even with GetYourGuide!
The Imagine Afghanistan program - powered by GetYourGuide - will include:
- Inspiration Sessions: Inspiration videos and AMA-style sessions. Successful recent immigrants to Germany from places in the Middle East share their success stories, their view on relevant technologies & tools in Germany.
- Community Building in Afghanistan: Together with local Afghan partners, Imagine will build a network within the Afghan developer community. This will build trust and create local live study groups which greatly increase learning outcomes.
- Digital Bootcamps: Imagine’s 3 week digital boot camp gives people detailed 360° feedback on their readiness for a job in Europe increasing their chance of finding a job. People receive communication advice, CV-Coaching, LinkedIn tips, insights on how to talk to German recruiters, and learn job hunting strategies.
- One-to-one Mentoring: Moving to another country is a life changing decision that should not be taken lightly. Personal mentoring is key, as is encouragement. Imagine has a team of experienced volunteers dedicating their time to coaching students via online video chats.
- Job Matching: An intro sometimes goes a long way. Humans are more than their resume, that’s why Imagine presents their students in an accessible online format with pictures and personal life achievements. To do so, Imagine works with a small but growing circle of firms, including GetYourGuide.
Build a better world
Let's make the world a place where it’s easier for young people from places like Afghanistan to find a job and a new life in Germany. Let’s make the world a place where neither your race or gender nor your birthplace shape what you can do. Let’s make it instead a place where two things get you anywhere: a curious mind and a courageous heart.
