What’s it about

The project is necessary because 30 per cent of new HIV infections in kangemi are in the adolescents group with 17 per cent of AIDS-related deaths falling in this category [who are school going]. The campaign is aimed at reducing new HIV infections among adolescents and particularly young women in kangemi. The high rate of infection among adolescents is a great challenge and threat to the country and continent at large. Currently 42 per cent of positive youths are not on antiretroviral While 78% of adults living with HIV in Kenya have access to antiretroviral treatment, just 36% of children have access to the life-saving medicines. Girls of ages [15-19 years] make the majority of teen HIV infections in kangemi, research shows that of the 250,000 new HIV infections 160,000 are girls.2013 research show that new infections among adolescents are not decreasing as they should, research shows that in slums like kangemi there were infections every two minutes among adolescents of ages between 15-19 years respectively. AIDS is now the leading cause of death among adolescents in Africa and the second most common cause of death among adolescents globally, the slums like kangemi are the main contributors In Africa and in country like Kenya, in 2013 120,000 [100,000-130,000] adolescents died of AIDS-related illness. UNAIDS estimates , adolescents are the only age group in which deaths due to AIDS are not decreasing , while all other age group combined experienced a decline of 38% in AIDS related illness deaths. Many children slipped out of care and treatment care follow ups were lost, or they were never diagnosed, he majority of 2.1[2.9-2.3] adolescents living with HIV in 2013,were as a result of mother to child transmission, and many do not know their status, they enter into adolescents with limited opportunities foe early detection or referral to a treatment programs, and they are falling ill and dying of preventable deaths, of the total of adolescents living with HIV globally in 2013 ,83% reside in sub-Sahara Africa, which Kenya is part and kangemi is where this cases are physical. This project is will take place in 24 schools and the climax will be at the kangemi social hall where the entire community will be invited.
