What’s it about
Giving life should be a time of joy, not death. Yet the disturbing truth is that on average, each year in sub-Saharan Africa 162,000 women die during pregnancy and childbirth. Sadly, most of these deaths could be easily prevented if basic medical care was available.
Training health workers, particularly midwives, is the most cost-effective way to reduce maternal mortality. In light of the tremendous shortage of health workers at all levels across Africa, AMREF Health Africa has committed to training 15,000 midwives. One trained midwife can look after up to 500 mothers every year.
Our MBA class is supporting this great cause with a number of fundraising activities, with the aim to raise 12,000 Euro to support the campaign "Stand Up for African Mothers".
This amount can secure the training of an examinated midwife in South Sudan where 95% of deliveries take place at home without any professional medical assistance.
