What’s it about

Niobe is a member of Helping Uganda Do Business; a combined project between The University of Exeter's Enactus Society and non-governmental organisation, Mwenya Uganda. Helping Uganda Do Business is working to empower Ugandans and raise money for Mwenya by establishing two social enterprises in Uganda; responsible tourism and a sustainable agriculture project.

Responsible Tourism...
Enactus volunteers are helping to set up various activities for tourists such as cooking courses, drumming workshops, craft-making lessons...empowering local people to show tourists their daily lives and give them a more authentic experience of Uganda. The Enactus team are responsible for teaching marketing, PR, guiding skills and explaining to local unemployed people what tourists might be interested in. All employees will be from the local area and will be paid a fair wage for their time. All profits will be used to fund Mwenya Uganda's vital health care work in Central region of Uganda.

Sustainable Agriculture...
Mwenya Uganda have an existing Youth Development project growing mushrooms. The Helping Uganda Do Business team will teach the Mwenya community how to reproduce, market and sell their mushrooms. Mwenya's mushroom farm will be used as an 'example farm' to show unemployed people how to grow vegetables so that they can go on a earn a living for themselves. The mushrooms grown on Mwenya's 'teaching' farm will then be sold in hotels and restaurants, allowing the tourism industry to support community projects. All profits from these sales will be used to fund Mwenya Uganda's wital work in the Central Region of Uganda.

Your donations will help fund the start-up costs for this project so that the Ugandan team can take the reigns after our trip to Uganda in June.

Niobe will be travelling to Uganda in June to as part of a team of 15 students, working to empower Ugandans with the skills they need to continue these projects into the future.

A step closer to the motorbike purchase thanks to you!

E. Bailie posted this update on May 28, 2013.

I have just forwarded your donations onto funding the purchase of a motorbike which will allow the Ugandan team to transport themselves cheaply and easily between Mpigi town (the office) and the mushroom site. This also gives them the freedom to take the mushrooms to market at all hours of the day. The motorbike will also be used for the tourism project to transport out guests around Mpigi town, providing them with a really authentic, low-cost Ugandan transport experience. When not being used, the motorbike can be hired out cheaply to members of the community who can earn money from taxi-ing people around. This helps young people who would not be able to buy a motorbike earn a living and will also provide a small but steady income for Mwenya Uganda. Having a motorbike is a significant step which is all thanks to you! We really appreciate your support.

Three joyful people raising hands with hearts and confetti, celebrating together.
