The Women's Peace Project SEKA is a Center for therapy, education and recreation. After 10 years of work on the Adriatic Island of Brac the project moved to the town of Gorazde in Bosnia and Herzegowina in September 2007.

Even 14 years after the end of war through the Dayton-agreement the population in Bosnia and Herzegowina still suffers from the psychological and social consequences of war.
The population of the town of Gorazde is severely war traumatized - people suffered from almost four years lasting siege, shelling, and hunger. Many women and girls suffered from war rape and other cruelties. Children were - as in all wars - the most helpless and vulnerable victims. A big number of them still today are struggling with their experiences in war, as up to now there was no possibility for psychotherapeutic aid in the whole Kanton (department) Goražde.
But also children, having been born after war, grow up in an athmosphere, in which the war and the survived traumas are always present. The traumas of parents and grandparents are transfered to them.

Since September 2007 project SEKA offers (trauma)therapeutic and psycho-educative help for women and children in individual and group work. If necessary and wished also other (male) members of family can be included into work.
From September 2009 on the small SEKA-Team will be supported by a new colleague, Amela Drincic, who will in the first months offer her work as volunteer. She will work with the women - together with therapist Gabriele Mueller.
As we appreciate her voluntary engagement very much we would like to pay her at least a small amount for food-costs..

  In the summer of 2008, my friend Ed and I were on a motorcycle trip through the Balkan states, into Greece, and to Mt. Nemrut, in the east of Turkey. We rode back through Bulgaria and Romania. All in all we were on the road for three months, 13 countries, and over 20,000 kilometers! The experiences were absolutely incredible and both we and the bikes made it. Since I am a big fan of betterplace (and the team in Berlin), Ed and I decided to visit some of the projects that were on our route. One of the projects was SEKA in Gorazde, Bosnia. I wrote about this truly amazing organization and our visit on my own travel site, www.journizer.com, but am pasting the text here as well as a betterplace Visitor. (The text is in German):

  Auf dem Weg durch Bosnien besuchten wir Gorazde, um ein “betterplace”-Projekt zu besuchen. Unerwartet passierte sehr viel mehr, und nach 24 Stunden fuhren wir weiter mit einigen neuen Freunden und vielen neuen Erfahrungen. Im folgenden schildere ich diesen Besuch des Projekts und der fast unglaublichen Geschichte von Gorazde und SEKA:
  
  Den Kontakt mit Gabriele (Leiterin des Projekts KUCA SEKA) stellte Aisha von betterplace her. Ein Telefonat mit Gabriele bestätigte unseren Termin am 20. Mai 2008. Gegen 12 Uhr mittags trafen wir zwei der SEKA Arbeiterinnen am Busbahnhof von Gorazde. Sie brachten uns zum SEKA Haus, damit wir die anderen Mitarbeiter und das Projekt kennen lernen konnten.
  
  Schon die ersten Eindrücke von Gorazde waren ernüchternd. Obwohl der Krieg schon viele Jahre in der Vergangenheit lag, waren noch überall Spuren des Kampfes zu sehen: Viele der Häuser hatten noch Einschuss- und Granatlöcher. Dasselbe galt auch für Straßen und Gehwege. Es waren aber auch viele Leute unterwegs. Reges Treiben herrschte in Cafés und den Läden an der Straße.
  
  Der Besuch im SEKA Haus war sehr interessant. Gabriele und Esma Drkenda erzählten uns die Geschichte von Gorazde und beschrieben die Arbeit von SEKA in Gorazde und davor in Brac.
  
  Amina und Senija, die zwei Vollzeittherapeuten, zeigten uns ihre Arbeitszimmer und erzählten einiges zum Ablauf der Therapiesitzungen mit den Frauen und Kindern. Es erschien uns fast unglaublich, was diese Frauen in Gorazde leisteten und mit welchem Engagement und welcher Überzeugung sie hinter dem Projekt stehen.
  
  Das Projekt SEKA kann ich aus ganzem Herzen empfehlen und will mich an dieser Stelle nochmal beim SEKA-Team für die Gastfreundlichkeit bedanken.

  Liebe Gabriele, ich wollte fragen, wie das ist mit dem Lohn von Amina. Es geht doch weiter im November, oder? Da wollte ich nämlich wieder gern mein Scherflein beitragen, denn ich weiß wie das ist, wenn man sich mit dem Lohn von Monat zu Monat hangeln muß.... Liebe Grüße, Adina

    Liebe Adina, Du bist wirklich ein Schatz! Natuerlich hast Du recht, dass ich wieder den Bedarf fuer Aminas November-Gehalt auf Betterplace stellen muss. Ich dachte nur, dass es uns vielleicht zuerst gelingt, den Oeko-Workshop mit den Kindern voll zu finanzieren und dann den Bedarf fuer Amina hinzuzufuegen. Auf jeden Fall koennen wir dein "Scherflein" dann sehr gut gebrauchen! Danke fuer Dein Mitdenken und Deine Unterstuetzung - in jeder Hinsicht! Liebe Gruesse Gabriele
