SEKA is Women's Peace Project in East Bosnia and a Center for therapy, education and recreation. After 10 years of work on the Adriatic Island of Brac the project moved to the town of Gorazde in Bosnia and Herzegowina in September 2007.
The project is supported and mainly funded by German Women's Organisation SEKA Hamburg e.V.

Even 12 years after the end of war through the Dayton-agreement the population in Bosnia and Herzegowina still suffers from the psychological and social consequences of war.
The population of the town of Gorazde is severely war traumatized - people suffered from almost four years lasting siege, shelling, and hunger.

Since September 2007 project SEKA offers (trauma)therapeutic and psycho-educative help for women and children in individual and group work.
Every summer the project organizes therapeutic recreation at the seaside for traumatized women and children.
In June 2008 we would like to invite a group of 20 traumatized women and children for therapeutic recreation in Neum at the Adriatic Sea.
10 - 14 days (it depends from our finances) four therapists will give psychological-pedagogique assistance to the children and their mothers in group-work and through individual talks. Besides this, of course, women and children will enjoy the sea, the beach and further activities the colleagues will offer them.
Through these "days of joy" women and children will - at least to some extent - overcome their painful experiences and regain self-esteem, trust and joy of life. After returning to their home town Gorazde, Project SEKA will offer them further support, if necessary.

The project is financed entirely by donations: For 20 women and children we need 16.770,- € for 12 days. As being more and more difficult to find the donations for this kind of project, we ask the community of betterplace for their help.

  Das erste Mal habe ich 1999 von SEKA gehört – über Freundinnen. Und nachdem dann im Sommer 2002 eine Gruppe Frauen und Kinder aus Gorazde im SEKA-Haus auf Brac waren, hörte ich ihre begeisterten Erzählungen, wie viel Wertschätzung, Aufmerksamkeit, Liebe, Verständnis und Freude sie im SEKA-Haus erlebt hatten. … Ich hatte dann das Glück, 2003 an einer der Therapiegruppen in SEKA teilzunehmen und dann 2004 und 2005 an dem Fortbildungszyklus für psychosoziale Helferinnen… Die Schrecken des Krieges hatten auch meine eigene Familie nicht verschont. Diese Zeit und all die furchtbaren Vorkommnisse hatten mich meines Selbstwertgefühls, meines Vertrauens und meiner Selbstachtung beraubt. Ich hatte mich in einem inneren Kerker verschlossen, aus dem ich nicht mehr heraus konnte und wollte… Durch die therapeutische Arbeit in SEKA habe ich zum ersten Mal mir selbst Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt, habe wieder positive Energie bekommen, meine Kreativität gespürt, angefangen, mich selbst wieder wertzuschätzen…. Ich habe begonnen, mir meiner Bedürfnisse bewusst zu werden und für mich zu sorgen… Nachdem ich in SEKA soviel bekommen hatte, verspürte ich den Wunsch, dies nicht nur für mich selbst zu behalten, sondern es auch an andere weiterzugeben. Ich war glücklich, als sich die Gelegenheit ergab, in Kuca SEKA auf Brac mitzuarbeiten…. Es ist ein wundervolles Gefühl, das Wissen, die Fähigkeiten, die Freude, Wertschätzung, das Verständnis, die Wärme und Liebe, die ich bekommen habe, an andere Frauen und Kinder weiterzugeben…. In Kuca SEKA, in meiner Umgebung oder wo auch immer. Kuca SEKA ist eine Oase für die Seele – für alle, die da kommen… Ich freue mich sehr, dass ich diese Arbeit nun in meiner eigenen Stadt fortsetzen kann, denn die Menschen hier haben so viele Jahre voller schrecklicher und tragischer Geschehnisse überlebt. SEKA wird durch sein Programm vielen Frauen und Kindern helfen können, die Kriegstraumata oder auch Gewalt in der Familie erlebt haben. Ich möchte mich bei all denen bedanken, die durch ihre Spenden diese Arbeit möglich machen: Liebe Freundinnen und Freunde von SEKA in Deutschland, es ist ein wunderbares Gefühl, wenn wieder Frieden in die Seele einkehrt, wenn wir wieder zu wachsen beginnen, das Gefühl sich selbst anzunehmen und wertzuschätzen und mit Freude den nächsten Morgen zu erwarten – das ermöglichen Sie vielen Menschen durch Ihre Unterstützung für SEKA.“

  During my 2008 summer tour of Eastern Europe I had the opportunity to visit the SEKA Project in Gorazde, Bosnia. Although i didn't have the right timing to see the counselors in a session, I did meet several of the staff and get to tour the facilities. The pride with which the counselors demonstrated what a typical session would be like, gave me a warm feeling inside. For the children, many simple techniques, such as puppet role playing are used to help build self-esteem, trust, and respect for others, while for the women, group therapy, and goal setting help bring participants hope for the future.

  ich hab mir alles intensiv angeschaut und bin beeindruckt. gut finde ich, dass gleich zu sehen ist, was gebraucht wird und wie die Entwicklung der Spenden ist. kann ich noch Fürsprecherin werden? oder ist es mit 2 schon voll? herzliche grüße - marija
