The intention is to ensure that following sixth grade, the school children are able to attend a secondary school and also earn a school leaving certificate from it. In the 2006/2007 scholastic year, all sixth graders, who had taken part in the student assistance program over a longer period, received at least a recommendation to attend secondary school. That is a singular achievement in a district in which, just a few years ago, many school children were not able to even attend the lower secondary school. The long-term objective for the young people in this district is to give them better access to our society’s values while improving their level of education, thus contributing to their integration.
In 2005, the project was awarded the Integrationspreis (Integration Prize) of Berlin for its innovative approach. The project was subsidized by the program initiated by the federal government and the various German states “Socially Integrated City” for “Districts with Special Development Needs”. These subsidies will end on December 31st, 2007. Our greatest challenge is to keep the project going nonetheless and to expand it in the coming years.
