Mazingira Bora Project was founded in 2005 to activate the neighbourhood to take care of their own environment. Very ambitious people are managing from then on to recruit new members, coordinate them for clean ups and educate the community on the importance of living in a conducive environment.
Since Huruma is a slum in Nairobi where there is a lack of government commitment to pick the collected garbage to the disposal site frequently -maybe once in two months time- the founders of Mazingira Bora Project saw that there was a huge need for organizing themselves to minimize the risk of illnesses because of the trash lying everywhere; its also dangerous for little kids which often play in it or with it.
Now Mazingira Bora has 15 members which regularly collect and dispose trash and offer once a month training workshops to the community where they learn about risks of trash and how to take care of a cleaner environment.
Our dream is also to give workshops in other slums of Nairobi so we can expand the idea of Mazingira Bora and create a healthier environment to the entire slums of Nairobi.
Being an environmental organization Mazinira Bora's big goal is to have planted 500 trees in the year of 2010 of which they achieved already 100 and are yet to plant the remaining 400 upcoming august to achieve the whole of 500.
