Ongoing enrollment & urgent need for electricity i
With the effects of the post election violence that affected most of the rift valley province (the main maize producing zone for the country), the high inflation rate on food commodities, and the global financial crises, there is currently a looming famine facing 10 million Kenyans. More than 56% of the 38 million Kenyans are believed to live below poverty line.
The government estimates that 10 million Kenyans who are suffering food shortages include 1.5 million children under the school feeding program, 2.5 million people suffering from various diseases including HIV and Aids and orphans, and further 2.5 million poor people in towns.
The food shortage, the government confirms, were partly caused by the post-election violence, which affected the country’s bread basket districts in Western, Nyanza and Rift Valley provinces, but is also due to drought in Eastern, parts of Central, Coast and North Eastern provinces.
Maize harvested in Rift Valley, Western and Nyanza should be entering the national food chain from this month, but because of the disruption of ploughing, the burning of food in stores and the fact that people were prevented from planting during the violence early last year, has contributed to the shortage. Added to this, the crucial long rains were inadequate in most places and the short rains failed altogether in some districts.
Despite the challenges, and the ongoing teachers’ strike that has paralyzed learning in public schools, LDK continues to serve the needy children. Additional enrollment of less fortunate children is ongoing and your support will ensure that we serve the helpless children best.
An orphan or destitute child living in the slums without intervention will remain illiterate. In less than ten years, this child will perpetuate an already vicious cycle that has debilitated several generations. With compassionate, understanding assistance, these children will break free of the cycle of poverty. They will become a role model, earning a good wage and working professionally, encouraging other people in their community that success is possible, within their reach.
Our children haven’t paid their fees yet. Please support us to ensure that they remain in school and get an education and good foundation for a better future. Together we can bring hope to the children and help change the world that we live in.
We also urgently need to settle our electricity bill at the home for orphans. For two months now children haven’t used electricity yet they need it most for their studies. We have an accumulated bill of 500 euros but our monthly bill is currently 50 euros. Your support goes towards providing the neediest children with an enabling learning environment while they are in school. They consider the orphanage their home and our prayer is to make it truly a home for them to be able to study and complete their class assignments without interference caused by lack of light/electricity. Thank you very much for your continued support.
