CINEMA JENIN NEWSLETTER!
A new cinema for Jenin. The dream to bring the dilapidated old cinema in Jenin back to life has developed a breathtaking dynamic. In December 2008, Marcus Vetter, Fakhri Hamad and Ismael Khatib founded the ‘Cinema Jenin’ association in Tubingen in order to rebuild the old cinema in the northern region of the west bank. The project has expanded impressively over the past 12 months.

Construction works
The cinema is currently being renovated under the supervision of architect Johannes Hucke from Berlin who is working in close cooperation with Palestinian construction workers. The work on the cinema, including all furnishings and technical equipment, is supposed to be finished by spring 2010. A stage for theatre performances and concerts has already been completed. The original cinema chairs (400 pieces) are currently being renovated by local upholsterers. Besides that, there are plans to build an open air cinema with 1200 seats and a new cafeteria on the same property, which measures 2,000 m² in total. Since August, Cinema Jenin has also been running a guest house (32 beds), which has been renovated by a group of international volunteers. This means that journalists and others who are interested to see the project firsthand can now stay in Jenin at an affor-dable rate. Since last summer there have already been more than 200 visitors.
The grand opening
The opening festival will take place at Cinema Jenin from 1 – 7 August 2010. A group comprised of Palestinian and international staff is already working hard organising the opening ceremony. The films shown will include ten international and ten Palestinian films, amongst which are blockbusters like ‘Our Earth’ or ‘Deep Blue’, which will also be synchronised in Arabic beforehand by locals. ‘Cinema Jenin’ has managed to secure the official rights to distribute the BBC documentary ‘Deep Blue’ within the Arab world. We are happy to announce that a similar cooperation will soon be enjoyed with ‘Boomtownmedia’ (Rhythm is it!), a German production firm and international distribution company. A number of prominent guests like Leonardo DiCaprio, Mikhail Gorbachev and Roger Waters (of Pink Floyd!) have already expressed great interest in coming to the opening festival. Admission to the movies will cost 5 Schekel (1 Euro), and foreigners will be able to purchase a special ‘festival pass’. With respect to accommodations, guests and visitors may choose to stay either at the Hadad Festival Hotel or with a local host family in Jenin.
Job opportunities and sustainability
The majority of the cinema’s future staff will be Palestinians, who will run the cinema in cooperation with international supporters. The creation of jobs in technology, subtitling and synchronisation of movies, translation services, and film and commercial production will ensure that ‘Cinema Jenin’ will be sustainable in the future. We are planning to finish the construction of our own synchronisation office by 2010. Ismael Khatib, Fakhri Hamad and Marcus Vetter, the initiators of Cinema Jenin, are also planning to cooperate with the Freedom Theatre in Jenin who is already running a film school for young Palestinians. Representatives of the well-known ‘Sam Spiegel film school’ have suggested, during a visit of the cinema in November 2009, the establishment of an ongoing exchange programme between film students in Jenin and Jerusalem. Finally, film-making workshops for children will be held regularly from August 2010 onwards.
Partners and Tubingen as new project partner
The German Foreign Ministry supports ‘Cinema Jenin’ within the framework of its ‘Future for Palestine’ programme. The Ministry has made possible part of the renovation of the cinema with more than 240,000 Euro including the acquisition of two D-Cinema projectors. ‘Goethe Institute Ram’Allah’ is planning to open a movie library and gallery on the first floor of the cinema and is also using one of the rooms of the guesthouse for German lessons. AirBerlin has been extremely generous in sponsoring monthly flights (and excess luggage) to Tel Aviv and back and, in this way, support the work of our volunteers and staff. The ‘Cinema Jenin’ association would also like to thank our partners and sponsors, like Ferrostaal, Gerriets, Xpand, Bewegte Bilder, the ‘Cinema for Peace’ Foundation, Hasso Plattner Ventures and all the many others whose logos are shown on our webpage and without whose generous support we would not be able to do what we are doing!Cinema Jenin has also found a new reliable partner in the city of Tubingen: The formal ties between the project and the city will ensure that there will be a consistent cultural exchange and increasing connections with Europe after the opening of the cinema. What had started with the cinema in Jenin will also be growing in Tubingen. Read more in our blog
Poster Campaign 2010
The Cinema Jenin association will be running a poster campaign from January 2010 onwards in order to publicize the project internationally. The idea is to find sponsors who are willing to finance a large poster or a poster space and who will be given the option to publish their logo on the poster in return. Posters are already available for download in various formats from the website. Everyone can distribute the poster – the names and logos of sponsors comprise the tesserae in the Cinema Jenin butterfly logo.
The Movie – on a personal note: The ‘Heart of Jenin’ is now available on DVD..
..and will come into Swiss cinemas on the 17th of December 2009. The main character Ismail Khatib has been invited to Thomas Gottschalk’s TV show ‘ZDF-Jahresrueckblick Menschen 2009’ on the 6th of December 2009 at 8.15 pm.
