The mobile still is steaming

In March, the new mobile KAITE-still was being used in Kufunda for the very first time.

We could extract Taget oil. The advantage of the mobile distiller is that KAITE can take it to the farmers who grow plants for the production of essential oils and they don’t have to bring the voluminous mass of harvested crops to the distiller, therefore avoiding high transportation costs. It also enables the farmers of remote areas to process their harvested crops.

Trip to the Lion & Cheetah Park On Mai, 24 and 31, the KAITE team was able to take two groups of orphans from Kambuzuma to the trip to the Lion & Cheetah park, an animal park close to Harare.

After a sightseeing tour in the park, where the children could see zebras, ostriches and lions, the group had a picnic and a little guidance through the attached zoo.

The children were very happy and for the KAITE team, it was likewise a nice experience to see the children laugh.

KAITE on the Planet Diversity In Mai, the UN conference on biodiversity and biological security took place in Bonn. KAITE participated in the conference on the convention on biological diversity. There René Fischer presented KAITE’s work. <!-- [if !supportLineBreakNewLine]--> <!-- [endif]-->

Flea market in Berlin

In May, the trust members Elisa Manukian, Dr. Kathryn Spieß, Asta von Unger, Alexa Pastoors and Holger Lengsfeld cleaned out their closets to go to the flea market for the benefit of KAITE.

Apparently, the stand on the Arkonaplatz in Berlin was fun and a nice donation was the result for KAITE.

Chairman of the board Klaus Pilgram supported KAITE’s work in Zimbabwe In the middle of June; Klaus Pilgram arrived in Harare to spent four weeks on behalf of the SES in Zimbabwe. Klaus Pilgram has been a member of the board since the foundation of the German KAITE trust and has previously worked in the development sector for 30 years.

After taking a look at the work done by KAITE close to Harare, he worked together with the team on conceptual structures of KAITE and the preparation of proposals.

At the moment, KAITE is heading towards the next season which will start in October.

Therefore, the KAITE team visits small-scale farmers in remote areas of Zimbabwe and talks to them about a cooperation with KAITE. During the next weeks, KAITE will work on contracts for the individual farmers for long-living and fair partnerships.

On August 18th and 19th , KAITE attended a Workshop of the Zimbabwe Organic Producers and Promoting Association and worked on strategies to enhance the organic production in Zimbabwe. It was quite an interesting compilation of organisations around Zimbabwe who are involved in organic farming in some way, either through production, marketing or training. KAITE is going to join ZOPPA to enable it to contribute in the growth of organic farming in Zimbabwe.

Was 2008 schon alles bei KAITE passiert ist:

Die mobile Destille dampft Im März wurde die neue mobile KAITE-Destille erstmals in Kufunda in Betrieb genommen. Wir konnten Tagetes-Öl extrahieren. Die Destille hat den Vorteil, dass wir mit ihr zu den Bauern, die ätherische Ölpflanzen anbauen, fahren können. Das voluminöse Erntegut muss somit nicht zur Destille gebracht werden, wodurch ein hoher Transportaufwand vermieden wird. Und auch Bauern in entlegenen Gebieten haben die Chance ihre Produkte weiterzuverarbeiten.  

Ausflug in den Lion & Cheetah Park Am 24. und 31.05. konnten wir in zwei Gruppen mit den Waisenkindern aus Kambuzuma den lange versprochenen Ausflug in den Lion & Cheetah Park, einen Tierpark in der Nähe von Harare verwirklichen. Nach einer Rundfahrt durch den Park, bei der es Zebras, Strauße und Löwen aus der Nähe zu sehen gab, machten wir noch ein Picknick und eine kleine Führung durch den angegliederten Zoo. Die Kinder waren überglücklich und für die KAITE-Mitarbeiter war es ebenfalls ein schönes Erlebnis, die Kinder einmal richtig lachen zu sehen.

KAITE auf der Planet Diversity Im Mai fand in Bonn die UNO-Konferenz zu Biosicherheit und biologischer Diversität statt. KAITE nahm an der Tagung zur Konvention zur biologischen Vielfalt teil. René Fischer, unser Anbauberater, präsentierte dort die Arbeit von KAITE. <!-- [if !supportLineBreakNewLine]--> <!-- [endif]--> Flohmarkt in Berlin Auf dem Flohmarkt des Berliner Arkonaplatzes haben die KAITE-Vereinsmitglieder Elisa Manukjan, Dr. Kathrin Spieß, Asta von Unger, Alexa Pastoors und Holger Lengsfeld im Mai die Keller für unsere Arbeit leergeräumt. Anscheinend hate der Stand eine Menge Spaß gemacht und es ist eine schöne Spende für uns dabei herausgekommen. Wir danken den Organisatoren ganz herzlich für ihren Einsatz!

Vorstandsmitglied Klaus Pilgram unterstützt unsere Arbeit in Zimbabwe Klaus Pilgram, der seit Gründung des KAITE-Vereins im Vorstand ist und zuvor 30 Jahre in der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit professionell tätig war, kam zu einem einmonatigen Aufenthalt im Auftrag des SES Mitte Juni in Harare an. Zunächst schaute er sich KAITE’s Arbeiten in der Nähe Harares an. In den darauf folgenden Wochen arbeiteten wir an den konzeptionellen Strukturen von KAITE und bereiteten Förderanträge vor.

Aktuelles Momentan geht es mit großen Schritten in Richtung der nächsten Saison, die im Oktober beginnen wird. Dazu besuchen wir Kleinbauern und –bäuerinnen in den ländlichen Gebieten Zimbabwes und sprechen mit ihnen über eine Zusammenarbeit mit KAITE. In den nächsten Wochen werden wir Verträge mit den Bauern abschließen, um so den Grundstein für eine langfristige Zusammenarbeit zu legen.
