Laos lacks the resources to write and publish books. Without locally produced books a country has no voice. Disenfranchised people have even less. We need your help to publish one of the first Lao sign language texts.

I am an independent book publisher in Laos. Momobooks books focus on language learning. 10,000 books have sold since September 2008 and this a testimony of the desire for useful books in Laos.

For elementary level English texts, I have a plan to incorporate Lao sign language into the teaching. Teachers forget to communicate with their hands, their bodies, their faces and their heart.

When collecting signs, I learned that there are very few texts for Lao sign language. In fact, schools for the deaf are very new in Laos. Before these schools (3) were built, deaf people were isolated in their villages without any language to communicate with.

I am self-financing the research, writing and layout, but I need help for printing and distribution. Without help, this book will not reach the people who need them. In essence, not just the deaf, but everyone needs a book like this. The more we communicate and the more we share our worlds, the more hope there is for better futures.

We have an organisation assisting children with disabilities of different categories. The physically handcapped fit in the normal schools. The major challenge is with the deaf and the blind where schools are lacking the literature and instructional materials to assist these children in their education. I am therefore requesting that you assist these children whose literature is lacking. Can they access the books for the sign language?

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, Lao sign language is not suitable for the deaf in Uganda. Each country has their own unique sign language. (USL) Uganda sign language is apparently derived from American Sign Language (ASL) British and Kenyan sign language.

    Thank you and best wishes,

On a very quick Internet search, there appears to be a strong movement in deaf education in Uganda. I am sure that you can find texts for sign language that is used in Uganda.

    Hello,

what will /is be the content of the book(s) ?
You want to keep the books in your country or sell them in the abroad ?or both ?
What will be the subject(s) ? Laotic teaching books ? That would be great !
Would it help you to bind the book(s) in the abroad - if they are not too thick - and to sell them as booklet(s) in the abroad ?

Thank you for your question. The content of the book is a basic dictionary in Lao sign language. There is no book like this now. The book is essential for deaf students in Lao to study with. There are few teachers and only three schools for the deaf. Without a basic text, sign language cannot be easily standardized and the language cannot develop.

The book will be around 150 pages with around 600 signs. The signs are explained through photos of deaf students at the deaf school signing the various words.

The books will be printed in Vientiane, Laos. I wish to support the printing industry in Laos though printing is cheaper in other countries.

These books first must be distributed to the students, schools, parents, libraries and other public places. I am doing all the work in publishing the book. I need financial support to print them and distribute them. I look forward to your support.

    Thank you,
    Martin
