Compensation of your annual CO2 footprint

The average CO2 emissions per capita in Germany are up to 12 tonnes per year. In the literature, the values for CO2 binding per mangrove and year vary greatly, depending on the measurement method, location and mangrove species. Values range from low single digits to 15 and more kg/mangrove/year. To be on the absolutely safe side, we at Malizia Mangrove Park calculate with an extremely conservative value of 2 kg/mangrove/year over a period of 20 years. This means that 100 mangroves will bind about 4 tonnes of CO2 in 20 years and 300 mangroves will bind about 12 tonnes of CO2 in the same period.

To offset the annual CO2 footprint over the next 20 years, at least 300 mangroves should therefore be planted each year. More mangroves would shorten the offsetting period and make a further contribution to saving the planet. However, mangroves not only bind CO2, but also form a valuable coastal habitat for many animals and plants, and thus make an important contribution to the preservation of biodiversity and the protection of coasts and reefs. The cultivation of the seedlings and the plantations also create jobs and income opportunities in the surrounding communities. Please donate at http://www.maliziamangrovepark.com
