The recycling project requires quite some logistical efforts behind the scenes, but is very rewarding in the end. This is how it works: camp residents pick up empty plastic bottles and bring them to the recycling point. For every 10 bottles they receive a ticket which they can trade for items according to their needs (cold water, juice, milk, potatoes, onions, hygiene items, or other much needed goods). During the last months, every day around 15,000 empty bottles were sent to a recycling plant.
SBML is organizing the transport of the empty bottles from the camp to a waste disposal center through a contract with the Greek company « Vasilis Agritelis ». From there, the bottles are packed and shipped to Athens to be melted and recycled.
