E-Cash in AfgooyeCulimo Derow and her six grandchildren are HIJRA program beneficiaries in the small village of Balbaleey.

Before coming to Balbaleey, Culimo and her children lived in Baidoa. Culimo’s husband died in Baidoa, leaving her the sole breadwinner for her family. To survive, she moved the family to Balbaleey and started selling grass and farm residue to provide for food and clothing.

Things have not been easy for Culimo. Following the long drought in the region Culimo could no longer get grass to sell becoming even more destitude.

“Life in the village was hard! I was unable to provide for my grandchildren. We were desperate; there was nothing I could do to support them. We ate only one time per day!  I did not know how we would survive." says Culimo

“I Thank HIJRA for these monies. My children are now having something to eat and I am able to buy them clothes!  Now I use all the the monies to buy materials to sell at my Kiosk.  I will soon be able to provide for my famliy on my own!”

Since the first distribution of 75 USD, Culimo has become a role model in the community establishing her own small profit earning kiosk.

A donation amount of €450.00 was requested for the following needs:
