Mainz2Meran - it often happens in a way you didn’t expect...

My initial idea was called Mainz2Meran, as a reference to my last trip Mainz2Santiago.
I wanted to ride my bike 5 days from Mainz to Oberstdorf and then continue hiking 7 days over the Alps to Meran/o, Italy. This time, I even had 2 Mainz2Meran T-Shirts and 250 stickers ready, with a QR-Code connected to the fundraising website.

Half a week before my take-off, I got bitten by 3 ticks, 1 of them unfortunately already in my flesh. Therefor, I had to go to a hospital to have it removed. Due to the antibiotics I couldn’t do the bike tour. But giving up wasn’t an option, so a week later, on July 23rd, I took a train from Mainz to Oberstdorf and then my fundraising adventure hike started.

I hiked over and on top of several high mountains (+2.800m), crossed rivers, met nice people from all over Europe, I saw butterflies, marmots, capricorns, goats, I could enjoy beautiful alpine sceneries and even some snow.

I woke up to sunrises and often finished my hiking day with a beautiful sunset. I stayed at cozy and cheap alpine huts with kind owners who often prepared me themselves a delicious dinner and gave me a comfortable bed for the night. Due to COVID, the occupation in those huts was only 1/3 of the regular occupation, which made my stays even calmer and for me therefor nicer.

After 7 days, 11.955m of altitude, 40,1 hours and 107,2 km climbing up and down the hills and valleys, I was happy and proud and it felt really good to have arrived safe and sound in the wonderful, prosperous valley of Meran/o, full of apple- and nectarine/peach trees and vineyards.

Since my charity hike, another 1.000€ have been donated to la Esperanza Granada.
If you want to see, where my next trip will take me too, follow me on insta: mainz2santiago.
I wish you all a fantastic and inspiring 2021!

Stay safe, healthy and happy,
Lucas
