School toilets in rural Kenya
To change the miserable situation of school toilets and make safe sanitation accessible, a group of well wishers from Bielefeld has founded a non-profit organization, the Hand of Progress e.V.
We want to break the vicious cycle of diseases caused by poor sanitation, get rid of the awful latrine odours in school compounds and improve children's wellbeing by building new sanitation facilities in Kenyan schools. Our work is based on Christian principles of doing good and caring for the vulnerable. Why?
Currently, about 2000 learners in Mukuyu, Kitale have to share a few unsafe latrine toilets. There is no running water and no way of washing hands. This leads to poor hygiene and often to diseases. The stinking latrine smell is unbearable.
1. Construction of school sanitation facilities
2. Collection of fresh water from wells and rainwater
3. Planning and construction of a wastewater disposal plant
