More than half a million people from Iraq alone have fled their countries since August 2014. Many people are now homeless and live in huge tent cities on desert ground, together with several ten thousands of other refugees. Under these wretched circumstances life is especially difficult for the weakest: the orphaned children and single mothers who depend on the help of relief agencies. For these children and mothers we are trying to create a safe future by building an orphanage.
Who we are
Our Bridge is a non-profit organization based in Oldenburg, Germany. The German team now has 10 members and is very well connected with aid workers in Northern Iraq. All team members are young highschool or university students who work on a voluntary basis. Main focus of the team activities is to find individual sponsors (for orphaned children and single mothers) and to do fundraising.
Person in charge is Ali Akyol, member of the board of the non-profit organization Our Bridge e.V., Oldenburg Germany. Administrator is Mrs. Guelsen Doehr, based near Cologne, Germany. Guelsen is helping to generate the amount needed for the orphane on a voluntary basis. All donations go directly into the account of the non-profit organization Our Bridge and will be exclusively used for the Orphanage.
Our Bridge e.V. is planning an organizing the construction oft he biggest and first ORPHANAGE IN NORTTHERN IRAQ. The young charity places special importance on thre creation of a new life and learning perspective, to guarantee sustainable support: help people help themselves. Enable them to liberate themselves from the cycle of poverty by offering orderly structures in an orphanage with integrated school. Create a safe shelter for people to help them become capable and active so they in turn might be able to help others later.
The orphanage – with integrated school - is to be built in Northern Iraq near the Xhankê refugee camp. People mustn’t be uprooted nor separated from their families.
With this campaign we are trying to generate additional funds for the construction of the orphanage. A number of activities have been – and will continue to be – organized by the team in Germany i.e. a benefit concert in February 2016 in Germany.
Design of orphanage
The orphanage is planned in a spacious and open way. It is to become the home of 132 now homeless people. The main focus is the construction of the building.
The orphanage (school) is a two-storied building.
On the ground floor there is a spacious kitchen with eating area, seating up to 100 persons to enable people to eat together.
The design of the structure (with own infirmary, storage rooms, connection to the electricity and water system – standards which are not at all self-evident locally) stimulates this type of emancipation.
