Hello, I’m Oliver von Malm. An architect from Innsbruck, Austria. In 2011, I first visited Kibera in Nairobi during a round the world trip as a student. Kibera in Nairobi is one of the world’s largest slums of Africa. According to an estimation of the UN, the whole population of Kibera is about 700.000 residents with more than 2000 people per ha. Poverty and the pollution through waste, sewage water and excrements is extremly high. Pursuent to this is the incidence rate.

In this surrounding I met some motivated teacher who founded two schools in Kibera. They wanted to gibe the children a chance for education. These teacher, slum residents by themselves, were teaching without sallary. They had to work additionally during the night to provide the children some food in the school. Most of the families in Kibera cannot afford more than one meal a day.

This all moved me to START SOMEWHERE - which also became the name of my non-profit organisation. I first started to help the schools in the slum. And a lot has happened since. The teachers get paid. We’ve built a terrace, so the kids don’t have to play in the sewage system. The donation of a mechanical sewing machine started a sewing room. Now the parents earn a little bit of money and they’ve sewn school uniforms for their kids. There are new education materials. And a fundamental medical care is guaranteed through a cooperation with Doctors without boarders.

Every donation helps to pay the running costs at the schools - especially the daily food for the children. Start Somewhere is a non-profit organization. 100% of the donations goes to each particular cause. Since 2011, we work faithfully together with our local contacts in Kibera. Through regular visits we see the developments on-site.

2011 we had 80 pupils. Today they are 600. One of the schools, the Oloo´s Children Centre is bursting at the seams. It is really hot inside the building because it was built without windows. There are not enough toilets - and the ones that are there - are dirty and stink. The kitchen is unhygienic. So, with all these facts - the slum dwellers asked me to build a new school.
