Refugees in Cologne: Escaped from war, but their traumatic memories remain
Around 40 % of all refugees in Germany are deeply traumatized. Besides safe housing and proper physical care they desperately need psychological support to deal with their dreadful experiences before and during their escape from their home countries. Each year therapists and social workers from the Therapiezentrum für Folteropfer und Flüchtlingsberatung des Caritasverbandes für die Stadt Köln e.V. look after 3000 to 4000 refugees, who have literally gone through hell.
We often have to act fast. Especially unaccompanied minors are in bad shape, many of them are suicidal. With great patience we try to win back their trust in therapy sessions for groups and individuals as well as creative activities and conversations. We want to give them a chance to live a self-determined life that is no longer haunted by flashbacks.
Regular funding for refugees is still insufficient, particularly for trauma therapy. We provide experienced therapists, trained interpreters and a safe haven for traumatized refugees. Please support us with your donation!
