Dear United for Hope supporters,

on the 28th of May we celebrated International Menstrual Hygiene Day, together with non-profits, government agencies, individuals, private sector and media organisations across the world.

On this occasion, we are reminded of the importance of our continuous commitment to break the silence, raise awareness and change negative social norms around Menstrual Hygiene.

The first step to breaking taboos

Breaking the silence is the first step on the way to improve menstrual hygiene management practices and change societal misconceptions about periods. These are the goals of our Menstrual Hygiene awareness project, which we are glad to present you through our latest video:

We signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the primary and secondary Education Department of the District of Kushinagar, in Uttar Pradesh, and launched our workshops on Menstrual Hygiene awareness for girls and gender sensitivity for boys initially in 100 schools. The workshops will directly impact a total of 10,000 male and female students, ultimately creating a more supportive and inclusive school environment.

We chose to start from schools, due to the unique opportunity they offer to gather large groups of adolescents, influence mindsets, promote education and behavioural change. Given the fundamental role that schools play within society, information can spread from students to households and communities, thus generating scalable impact.

Taking the project to the next level

These awareness workshops are a crucial part of our work, as they allow us to build strong connections with girls, boys, teachers and headmasters.

To strengthen the impact of our Menstrual Hygiene project, we are now planning to add to the project two equally important components: trainings for school teachers and headmasters and improved sanitary facilities.

With your support, we can scale our work and keep reaching girls, boys, their families and communities.

Follow our work on Menstrual Hygiene through our project page: Help girls and women in rural India to manage menstruation and break taboos.

Together, we can break the silence and invest in girls’ futures.
