Afrika Rise supports Beacon of Hope Unganda (BoHU) - a youth led non-profit organization established in Uganda in 2006 with a vision of helping to those least able to help themselves. They conduct programmes supporting quality education in targeted under-resourced communities with a focus on children and youth. BoHU operates on a non-political, non-denominational, and non-sectarian basis, welcoming every Ugandan in need.

In rural areas in Uganda there are still many children without access to quality education. This is due to lack of facilities at available schools, long distances, and lack of teachers, overcrowded classes and classrooms that are in disrepair. The project aims to establish a village school in Kasala, Kyampisi Subcounty - Mukono District to give its orphans, abused children and children from very poor families a better chance in life, through the establishment of a literacy program. Special attention will be given to girls as unskilled girls are more vulnerable than boys.

Original planning, for current status please refer to the News section

PHASE ONE: PURCHASING, CLEARING OF LAND, ARCHITECTURAL PLAN
The land title will be obtained by the end of December 2012. It is an area of 3 acres (app. 4.000 m²). After clearing the ground architectural planning will take place including foundation planning, structural/civil planning, electrical plan, water and sanitation.

PHASE TWO: BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION
Construction of the 4 classrooms, one office room, 3 rooms of toilet. The 4 classrooms each will have one door and four windows each. The walls will be made from locally baked bricks and timber, the doors and windows of metal and the roof of zinc sheets. Finally a 10 m³ storage tank for rainwater collection will be added. The BoHU team will mobilize parents and local community members to make bricks for the buildings, contribute other locally available materials and provide security for the materials.

PHASE THREE: FURNISHING, START OF SCHOOL OPERATION
After the construction work classrooms will be equipped with chairs to prepare the school to start learning and teaching activities in late March 2013. Qualified teachers are available as BoHU agreed with responsible authorities to provide four teachers who will be paid and accomodated. The last act will be the buying of the text books.
